A transformative experience: Oxford Summer School 2024

Our intensive summer program, held in partnership with St Antony’s College, University of Oxford, provided an enriching experience for participants from NEWTON University. While we delved into cutting-edge topics such as leadership, management, and AI’s influence on the future, the true benefits of the program extended far beyond academics. Participants returned enriched with lifelong friendships, personal growth, and valuable insights that will shape their futures.

This year’s curriculum focused deeply on leadership, management, and entrepreneurship, while also emphasising personal growth and well-being. Through interactive workshops, participants honed their leadership skills and learned to navigate an ever-evolving world, particularly the growing impact of artificial intelligence.

To provide further insight into the experience, we asked three participants from NEWTON to share their reflections on their time at Oxford.

Adam Kadlec - First year student

What was your first impression of Oxford, and how did studying in such a prestigious environment impact you?

My first impression of Oxford was overwhelming. The blend of historical architecture, rich traditions, and academic excellence creates a unique atmosphere that immediately captivated me. Studying in such a prestigious environment motivated me to strive for higher academic performance while developing the confidence to pursue my ambitions.

Which lecture or experience from the summer school had the greatest impact on you, and what inspired you the most during your time there?

The lecture by Associate Professor Jiří Koleňák, titled "Connatural Management & Authentic Leadership in a Rapidly Changing World," profoundly impacted me. His discussions on authentic leadership and balancing corporate structures with personal responsibility made me reflect on the importance of not only delivering results but also seeking personal happiness and self-fulfilment. This approach inspired me to focus on developing my skills as a future leader while remaining true to myself.

Did you have the opportunity to explore the culture and city of Oxford outside of the academic setting?

Absolutely! One unforgettable experience was a city tour led by architect Ross Sharpe, who revealed hidden corners of Oxford and the stories behind its iconic architecture. I visited several historic buildings and enjoyed peaceful walks through serene gardens, allowing me to fully appreciate the richness of Oxford's culture.

What would you recommend to students considering joining Oxford summer school next year?

To all students thinking about attending the summer school, I highly recommend seizing this exceptional opportunity. You will gain access to top-tier education, forge new friendships across diverse cohorts, and acquire fresh perspectives on both study and life.

Ing. Julie Byrtusová - Graduate

What was your first impression of Oxford, and how did participating in such a prestigious environment impact you?

My first impression of Oxford was that it is a place rich in incredible history, where education blends with an inspiring atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. Being at such a prestigious university instilled in me a sense of respect, motivation, and determination. I realised how significant it is to be part of a community that shares the values of education, research, and innovation. Participating in this environment influenced me by giving me new perspectives on leadership and approaches to personal and professional growth, while also motivating me to pursue further education.

What key skills or knowledge did you gain from Oxford?

The summer school deepened my understanding of leadership and resilience in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. Lectures such as "Connatural Management & Authentic Leadership" by Prof. Jiří Kolenák and "The Art of Failure: Building Resilience and the Entrepreneurial Spirit" by Tomáš Studeník taught me how to lead authentically and manage challenges effectively while developing irreplaceable skills like empathy and adaptability.

Do you think the Oxford experience has influenced your career path?

Definitely. The Oxford experience highlighted the importance of continuous learning and being open to new approaches, particularly regarding AI and its integration into business. The emphasis on a contextual and ethical approach to leadership is essential for my future career. These insights inspired me to seek opportunities to apply the experience I gained in my current professional environment and develop the skills that will help me achieve my goal of becoming a leader in the retail industry.

How was the transition from NEWTON's academic environment to Oxford Summer School, and how did it change your view of education?

Transitioning from NEWTON to Oxford's summer school showcased the differences between Czech and British educational approaches. At Oxford, I learned the value of a personalised approach to development, a focus on leadership in the context of technology, and the ability to create space for open discussions between experts and students. This experience reinforced my understanding that education is not merely about knowledge but about inspiration, creativity, and the ability to lead people in complex situations.

What benefits do you see for students participating in the Oxford Summer School?

Participating in a summer school at Oxford offers students not only the chance to network with influential leaders in their fields but also to gain a profound understanding of the challenges confronting the modern world. Engaging in programs like "Leadership in the Age of AI" by Adrian Johnson and "Machine vs. Human Learning" by Daria Hvizdalová has significantly expanded my awareness of the essential skills and competencies that will shape our future. Furthermore, the shared experiences with fellow participants from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds enhance our perspectives, fostering both academic and personal growth.

Ing. Eva Loužecká - MBA student

What was your first impression of Oxford, and how did participating in such a prestigious environment impact you?

Oxford is a captivating city steeped in history, where each illuminated building adds to its enchantment. During my week there, I walked extensively, relishing the late-summer sunshine, and found time to reflect on my professional and personal life. This pause from daily routines allowed me to contemplate the broader implications of my dissertation work. The experience also inspired me to hope that my daughters might one day study in such an inspiring environment.

How would you evaluate the academic programs offered at the Oxford Summer School?

The program covered a range of intriguing topics that made me consider my approaches to failure, uncertainty, and the future of technology. While I’ve completed several leadership development programs, I would have appreciated more intensity and depth. However, I gained significant insights that I found beneficial.

What personal or professional contacts did you make, and how will they help you in the future?

I deepened my connection with Mr. Koleňák, and we agreed to discuss the development of some programs. I arranged a workshop with Mr. Studeník and connected with a student’s father who builds homes for seniors, resolving a personal matter. I also reached out to a lecturer from INSEAD to connect with a colleague overseeing leadership programs.

What new insights and experiences did you personally gain from this collaboration with Oxford?

My time in Oxford offered several invaluable insights. I learned the importance of slowing down to allow for reflection, as failures can often propel us forward more than successes do. Striving for perfection is not the objective; instead, embracing flexibility and navigating uncertainty with TRIZ techniques is essential. While artificial intelligence presents tremendous opportunities, it demands careful consideration and ongoing learning. Moreover, I discovered that meaningful relationships - both personal and professional - often benefit from a bit of dynamism and tension to truly flourish. Ultimately, cultivating these quality connections is vital for long-term happiness.

What benefits do you see for students participating in the Oxford Summer School?

The desire to continue learning and growing. A wealth of inspiration, meeting interesting personalities and experienced professionals. The university environment encourages deeper thinking beyond daily tasks, providing numerous interesting connections that can lead to friendships and professional collaborations.
