Anna Plechatá Krausová on TV Nova: International Students Face the Limits of the Czech Visa System

Interest in studying in the Czech Republic among international students has been steadily increasing. However, applicants from non EU countries often face lengthy visa procedures and limited capacity at Czech embassies, which complicate their entry into higher education.

In a TV Nova report, our Rector Anna Plechatá Krausová pointed out that many students have their visas rejected or are unable to secure an interview appointment at all. As a result, study start dates are delayed, universities are forced to rely on improvised online teaching, and significant potential is lost for both Czech higher education and the national economy.

According to Anna Plechatá Krausová, the Czech Republic has a long term interest in increasing the number of international students. As early as 2023, the National Economic Council of the Government recommended raising their share to as much as 50 percent. International graduates are also crucial for Czech companies, many of which face a shortage of qualified professionals.

The report highlights an issue that goes beyond education alone and directly affects the Czech Republic’s competitiveness in the international arena.

Jan Boubín for TV Nova: A record year for Czech e-commerce. Online shopping is growing faster than expected

Czech e-shops have had an exceptionally strong year. Sales exceeded CZK 200 billion for the first time, with growth outpacing experts’ expectations. Czech consumers are increasingly buying electronics, home and garden products, and beauty items online, while the importance of discount events and parcel lockers continues to rise. Our economist Jan Boubín explains in a report on TV Nova that the growth is driven mainly by a combination of rising wages, price stabilisation, and greater consumer confidence. According to experts, online shopping will continue to strengthen, supported in part by the growing role of artificial intelligence in customer decision-making.

Survey: What did your university studies give you?

What remains when the textbooks are closed and the diploma is handed in? A survey by the weekly magazine Respekt shows that the greatest value of university education lies not only in knowledge itself, but in the ability to think in context, work with uncertainty, and meet people who fundamentally shape one’s professional and personal direction. Their perspectives are shared by graduates of Czech and international universities, including a student of NEWTON University.
