Navigating NEWTON: Building resilience and fostering psychological safety

Starting a new semester is an exciting yet challenging time. At NEWTON University, we recognise the complexities of this transition, from academic pressures to social dynamics. We understand that rates of stress, depression, burnout and psychological discomfort continue to rise. It is becoming a societal problem, which we at NEWTON are intensively addressing. Our mission is to help you not just survive but thrive during this period, and a key part of that is building resilience and fostering psychological safety.

Our commitment to psychological safety

At NEWTON, psychological safety is more than just a buzzword - it’s a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. We understand that to truly learn and grow, students need to feel safe to express their ideas, ask questions, and make mistakes without fear of judgement. Earlier this year, we collaborated with Professor Amy C. Edmondson from Harvard University, a pioneer in the field of psychological safety. Her work underlines the importance of creating an environment where open communication and learning from failure are integral to the academic experience. We’ve integrated these principles into our curriculum and support services to ensure you have a secure and nurturing environment to explore your potential. You can access Amy’s most recent book, “Right Kind of Wrong”, which was named the Financial Times Book of the Year in 2023.

Fostering resilience in a fast-paced world

In a world where the rates of stress and burnout are alarmingly high, building resilience is crucial. Resilience is not about avoiding stress but learning how to navigate it effectively. At NEWTON University, we believe in turning challenges into opportunities for growth. We actively encourage students to view setbacks not as endpoints but as stepping stones toward personal development. Through our programs and resources, you’ll learn strategies to cope with stress, manage your workload, and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Learning from our Oxford experience

Our recent summer school at Oxford University provided a unique platform for students to immerse themselves in an intellectually stimulating environment. This experience was a powerful demonstration of the importance of resilience and psychological safety. Students were encouraged to engage with challenging material, participate in open discussions, and embrace the process of learning without the fear of failure. They returned with new perspectives and a reinforced belief in their capacity to overcome obstacles. This experience serves as a reminder that stepping outside your comfort zone, with the right support, can lead to remarkable personal and academic growth.

Support services and resources

NEWTON University offers a comprehensive range of support services designed to help you build resilience and feel safe throughout your academic journey. Whether you're dealing with academic stress, personal challenges, or just need someone to talk to, we're here to support you. Our counsellors and faculty are committed to creating an inclusive environment where you can freely express your concerns and seek guidance. You’re not limited to just one point of contact - any of our staff members will be happy to assist and direct you to the appropriate resources. Additionally, our FeelSafe initiative provides access to mental health support, counselling services, and practical tools to manage stress and anxiety.

Building a supportive community

A significant aspect of psychological safety is feeling connected to a community that supports and uplifts you. We encourage you to actively participate in university life - join clubs, attend events, and engage with your peers. At NEWTON, we aim to build a culture where every student feels valued and heard. By contributing to this culture, you're not only enhancing your own sense of belonging but also helping to create a safer and more inclusive environment for others.

Get involved in our research and initiatives

We're continuously working to improve the well-being of our students. As part of this commitment, we invite you to participate in our ongoing research on psychological safety and resilience. Your feedback and experiences are invaluable in helping us understand how we can further enhance our support systems and foster a positive learning environment.

Remember, YOU’RE NOT ALONE

The university experience is a journey with its share of highs and lows. It's normal to feel overwhelmed at times, but remember, you don't have to go through it alone. It's okay to ask for help, make mistakes, and take risks. NEWTON is committed to being your family in this journey, providing the resources and support you need to navigate challenges effectively. Embracing resilience and fostering psychological safety will not only help you succeed academically but also empower you to face future challenges with confidence.

Better Mind, Better Brno – a new dimension of leadership

The second edition of Better Mind in Brno confirmed that mental wellbeing is becoming one of the key themes in modern education and leadership. This year’s event offered practical techniques, inspiration, and honest reflections on what it means to handle pressure, seek balance, and lead in a world where our mind is our most important tool. The article is based on conversations with the organisers, Ondřej Nádvorník and Sandra Keyzlarová.

I came to NEWTON University thanks to what is now, quite literally, family. We’re very much a NEWTON Family in every sense of the word. My husband studied here, his sister and her husband did as well, and she even worked at NU. Their experience — and especially the fact that NEWTON is completely different from traditional universities in its approach, atmosphere and focus on practical learning — convinced me it was the right choice.

Not Just Bouncing Back: Connecting Systemic and Individual Resilience in a Changing World

This spring, I had the opportunity to speak at the Smart Zero City 2025 conference in Taiwan, organised by Yuan Ze University and chaired by Professor Miko Yu — a gathering of experts, innovators, and city leaders exploring how to future-proof urban life. We heard about digital infrastructure, green energy, and smart transport systems.
