High energy prices are weakening European industry and widening the gap with the United States and Asia. In an expert survey published by Echo Weekly, NEWTON University economist Jan Boubín outlines measures that could reduce energy costs and strengthen the resilience of Europe’s energy market.
How can Europe make its energy sector more competitive internationally? Echo Weekly put the question to eight experts from the fields of energy, economics, investment and industry. Their contributions examine energy prices, regulation, infrastructure modernisation, renewable sources and the future of nuclear power.
Jan Boubín of NEWTON University identifies supplier diversification as one route towards greater competition and lower prices. In his view, easing parts of the European regulatory burden could reduce final costs for households and businesses without requiring the EU to abandon its long-term environmental objectives.
He also highlights the need to invest in modern energy infrastructure and improve the efficiency of transmission from producers to consumers. Europe’s future energy mix should combine a measured expansion of renewable sources with nuclear power, which can provide stable generation while meeting stringent environmental requirements.
