Jan Boubín on TV Nova: How Do Politicians’ Salaries Compare with the Private Sector?

Senior politicians’ salaries are once again at the centre of public debate. While such earnings remain out of reach for most employees, experienced executives and business owners can earn considerably more. Jan Boubín, an economist at NEWTON University, put the figures into context for TV Nova.

The Czech Chamber of Deputies has backed the government’s proposal to freeze senior politicians’ salaries for five years at its first reading. However, the debate extends beyond salaries themselves to include expense allowances and the mechanism used to increase politicians’ pay each year.

TV Nova compared the current earnings of Czech legislators with salaries across other professions and remuneration at senior levels in the private sector. According to Jan Boubín of NEWTON University, any meaningful comparison must take into account the level of responsibility associated with each role.

He explained that senior executives and business owners with substantial responsibility commonly earn CZK 300,000 or more per month. At the very highest levels, remuneration can reach millions of Czech crowns. From this perspective, MPs earn less than many senior figures in business, despite their considerable public responsibilities.
