Jiří Koleňák: Čestmír, what brought you to media and conducting interviews? Did you aspire to be a journalist from a young age?
Čestmír Strakatý: It was complete coincidence. My entire life feels like a series of coincidences, and that suits me well. I never had a childhood dream of becoming a journalist, nor do I have a grand master plan today. My philosophy has always been to take things as they come naturally—embracing challenges, seeking new directions, and continuously reinventing myself without aiming for a specific title.
I certainly didn't start out wanting to be a journalist. I was a curious, inquisitive kid, but I entered media entirely by accident. At a point when I was unsure of my direction—working at a law firm while studying law, which didn't satisfy me—an opportunity opened up at Czech Television (Česká televize). I took it. From there, opportunities led to the current affairs show Události, komentáře, then to DVTV, and eventually into hosting almost overnight without prior camera experience. It built up through work, step by step, but chance played a major role.
Jiří Koleňák: When did you first realize that this was your calling?
Čestmír Strakatý: That’s an interesting question. For many years prior to hosting, I worked behind the scenes preparing interviews for others at DVTV and elsewhere. I recognized it was something I understood and did well. However, realizing that this was my distinct professional path—something deeply personal anchored under my own name—really crystallized with launching my independent podcast over the past three years. That’s where I felt, "Yes, I am on a path that is genuinely my own."
Jiří Koleňák: Was there ever a point where you lost sense of purpose and considered quitting?
Čestmír Strakatý: Many times. Before every major forward step in my career, there was usually a phase of hesitation, exhaustion, or burnout. When working intensely, it's easy to temporarily lose sight of meaning. Paradoxically, a new opening always arrived at those critical moments—whether leaving DVTV for CNC to lead video content, stepping in front of the camera to host, or transitioning to an independent subscriber model on HeroHero. Each turning point provided a fresh impulse and a renewed sense of purpose.
Jiří Koleňák: Is there a general principle that helps navigate those crossroads?
Čestmír Strakatý: For me, it comes down to stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing challenges beyond my existing skill set. Recently, I began hosting a television after-show for the reality series Zrádci (The Traitors) on Prima TV. It’s a very traditional broadcast format, quite distinct from my digital podcasting work. Stepping into that setting required pushing past initial discomfort.
Every new chapter has a steep learning curve. When I first began hosting, I understood the theory, but lacked practical execution. Pushing through that initial friction is essential. Over time, I learned to accept challenges rather than run from them.
Jiří Koleňák: What do you rely on when facing an unfamiliar challenge?
Čestmír Strakatý: Myself. You simply have to execute without letting fear paralyze you. I trust that I will navigate the situation, survive the experience, extract the lessons, and improve.
Building that internal confidence takes time. As a natural introvert, live hosting in front of large audiences used to be daunting—and on some levels, it still is. But I told myself, "You have to do this to break through the barrier; it's a necessary learning curve." Embracing that mindset makes all the difference.
Jiří Koleňák: What did your experiences across Czech Television, DVTV, and Reflex teach you?
Čestmír Strakatý: Over 16 years in media, each station provided a unique education. Public service television taught me core editorial standards: rigor, timeliness, consistency, and precision. DVTV taught me commercial agility, audience orientation, and creative strategy.
The single most valuable lesson across my career is consistency. Delivering a single great interview isn't enough. Success requires showing up consistently week after week, maintaining high quality, and continuously building momentum over time.
Jiří Koleňák: How has your approach to conducting interviews evolved over time?
Čestmír Strakatý: Fundamentally. I would never conduct an interview today the way I did three years ago. I prioritize continuous personal and professional evolution—moving away from rigid, scripted "German-style" structure toward conversational flow, active listening, and intuitive responsiveness. Finding my authentic interviewing voice rather than relying on a fixed template has made all the difference.
Jiří Koleňák: What core values and mindset drive your work?
Čestmír Strakatý: My focus is capturing genuine human stories. I aim to explore sensitive, complex topics with deep empathy without crossing into sensationalism or exploitation. Operating an independent media business requires strategic awareness, but the heart of my work remains delivering compelling, high-quality dialogue.
Jiří Koleňák: How do you approach controversial topics?
Jiří Koleňák: It depends entirely on context. Important public controversies must be addressed directly with the individuals involved. However, I avoid sensationalizing stories purely for clickbait. As a former colleague wisely noted, "There are no inherently tabloid topics, only sensationalist approaches." Maintaining editorial integrity while handling sensitive subjects requires a fine balance.
Jiří Koleňák: How do you construct your questions during an interview?
Čestmír Strakatý: It's largely intuitive and reactive. I prepare background research and write out questions, but I rarely follow them strictly. Once a conversation begins, I set the paper aside and follow the natural flow of dialogue. Reacting spontaneously to what the guest shares yields far richer, more authentic insights than sticking to a script.
Jiří Koleňák: That approach requires immense confidence.
Čestmír Strakatý: Confidence comes strictly through experience. Having conducted thousands of interviews, I trust my ability to navigate the conversation to a meaningful conclusion.
Jiří Koleňák: How do you handle unexpected moments or surprises during a recording?
Čestmír Strakatý: I actively seek out moments of genuine surprise. When a guest reveals an unexpected perspective, I pivot immediately to explore it further. Being flexible and trusting your instincts allows you to turn unscripted moments into the highlight of the episode.
Jiří Koleňák: What do you do when creative inspiration stalls?
Čestmír Strakatý: I take deliberate steps to disrupt routine. Recently, I brought a new colleague onto my team specifically to challenge my perspective and refresh our creative outlook. To prevent creative exhaustion, it's essential to seek fresh influences, collaborate with younger talent, and stay open to new ideas.
Jiří Koleňák: How do you prepare for an interview?
Čestmír Strakatý: Preparation varies by guest. Political interviews require rigorous factual preparation and structured policy inquiries. When interviewing artists, actors, or public figures, I focus on active listening—identifying unexplored angles in their past statements to uncover fresh insights. Thorough preparation gives you the freedom to improvise naturally.
Jiří Koleňák: Do you have personal pre-interview routines?
Čestmír Strakatý: I clear my mental space entirely. Distractions right before a recording impair focus. I also prefer working out in the morning before recording—it activates my physical and mental energy. Additionally, I limit myself to a maximum of two in-depth interviews per day to maintain absolute focus and conversational quality.
Jiří Koleňák: How has fatherhood impacted your worldview and career?
Čestmír Strakatý: Completely. Becoming a father shifted my emotional baseline and heightened my awareness of macro-societal issues—from technological shifts to global stability. It deepens my empathy for parents and shapes how I view the world my daughter will grow up in.
Jiří Koleňák: How do you view the rapidly changing media landscape?
Čestmír Strakatý: The media environment is evolving rapidly. Audiences are shifting away from traditional media conglomerates toward individual creators, independent podcasters, and personal brands. Viewers seek authentic connection and direct relationships with content creators.
While subscription platforms and paywalls are growing, the market will eventually hit saturation. Creators must focus on long-term sustainability, refining their core craftsmanship rather than chasing fleeting trends.
Jiří Koleňák: What is your perspective on Artificial Intelligence in media?
Čestmír Strakatý: AI can automate data processing and routine tasks, but fully synthetic AI podcasts lack authentic human emotion, nuance, and genuine connection. People fundamentally seek authentic human stories.
Jiří Koleňák: How do you handle public criticism or online hostility?
Čestmír Strakatý: I welcome constructive criticism—it helps me grow. Unfocused background noise is easy to ignore. Unprovoked hostility can occasionally be jarring, but recognizing that online environments often amplify negativity helps maintain healthy perspective.
Jiří Koleňák: How do you define personal success?
Čestmír Strakatý: Success means maintaining total creative freedom, standing proudly behind my work, finding genuine joy in the process, and delivering meaningful content that resonates deeply with a dedicated audience.
