From School desk straight to the Global Market

The idea of international business often starts with global negotiations, foreign travel, and fluent presentations in a foreign language. The reality, however, is shaped in everyday moments – balancing work and study, bridging cultural differences, and managing rigorous academic demands. Graduates of the English-taught Bachelor’s programmes in Global Business and Management (GBM) at NEWTON University share their personal experiences on what their studies truly gave them for their professional and personal lives.

Discipline Under Pressure and Adapting to a New Academic System

For Asmatullah Ahmadzai, entering university represented a major life milestone. He came to the Czech Republic from Afghanistan and joined NEWTON on a scholarship programme. The change of environment meant not only studying in an international community, but also quickly adapting to a new academic system, including demanding State Final Exams.

“What shaped me most was learning to handle real pressure,” Asmatullah recalls. “At one point, I was preparing for three State Final Exams, writing my thesis, sitting semester exams, and completing an internship at the same time. It was a lot, but it built solid self-discipline. By the time I graduated, I had much more confidence in what I was actually capable of. Today, I work full-time in international business, helping manage the export of German automotive parts across Latin America and the United States—something I honestly wasn’t sure would be possible when I first started.”

Challenging moments also shaped the experience of Ivo Kalík, for whom the programme was a lesson in directness and efficiency. “My biggest personal growth was realizing that if I just sit down and do the work, the task will get done,” Ivo summarizes. The language level of the programmes was another key asset: “The degree allowed me to start my dream job right away, without having to go through additional language screening.”

Connecting Theory with Everyday Business Practice

A common challenge for graduates is the gap between academic theory and the demands of the labor market. The GBM programme is specifically designed so that individual courses address the real-world needs of managing companies and projects.

A prime example is Jakub Martiška, who completed the programmes while working full-time. “The studies provided me with practical knowledge that I could directly apply to my career. Courses like marketing, strategic management, business administration, communication, and project management are subjects I still use in my day-to-day work. My greatest personal growth came in time management and learning to think in broader contexts and connect ideas across different fields,” explains Jakub, highlighting the open approach of lecturers with practical market experience.

Kristýna Poustková also highlights the practical nature of the programmes and the interactive atmosphere: “What surprised me most was how much the classes focused on practical, real-life application rather than just theory. The guest lectures by business professionals were inspiring, and the smaller class sizes created an interactive environment where everyone had the opportunity to participate and discuss.”

For Ágnes Rummer, one of the highlights was attending a summer school at the University of Oxford. “Having the opportunity to study at one of the world's most prestigious universities showed me how far hard work can take you. Getting to know the people there was just as valuable as the academic experience itself,” Ágnes notes.

She also emphasizes the importance of core values and mutual respect in global business: “GBM gave me the understanding that success is not just about achievements, but about the person you become along the journey. Our Chancellor, in particular, showed us through her actions that staying true to yourself, treating others with respect, and working hard are qualities that never go out of style.”
