NEWTON University Awarded €100,000 Grant to Study Safer Gambling Among Generation Z

How does Generation Z perceive gambling related risks, and which preventive measures genuinely influence their behaviour? NEWTON University has secured funding from Allwyn’s global Player Protection Lab after competing against 40 other international projects. The new research will also be introduced at an expert roundtable.

The NEWTON University project was selected as one of two winners in the inaugural Player Protection Lab programme. Backed by a €100,000 grant, the research team will examine young adults’ knowledge, self-control, impulsivity and perception of risk over the course of the coming year.

The project will develop the Safe Gambling Assessment Tool, designed to evaluate how Generation Z approaches gambling in both digital and physical environments. Researchers will test the effectiveness of spending limits, warnings, reflection prompts and other preventive measures. They will also create an international index comparing player protection conditions across countries.

At least 250 respondents will participate in the survey stage. This will be followed by experiments in a simulated digital environment and an international comparison. The team is expected to present its principal findings and practical recommendations in summer 2027.

The project will officially launch with an expert roundtable at NEWTON University on 5 October 2026. Representatives from the university, Allwyn, psychology, addiction studies and the non-profit sector will contribute to the discussion. The event is also open to students and members of the media.
