The Czech healthcare system is preparing for a major digital transformation. Electronic referrals, digital patient records and better data sharing promise more efficient care, but smaller medical practices could face substantial costs. Speaking to TV Nova, economist and entrepreneurship expert Roman Brauner explained why adapting to changing conditions is an inherent part of running a business.
Medical records in the Czech Republic are expected to be fully digital by 2029. GPs, dentists and outpatient specialists will therefore need to invest in new technology, data infrastructure and cybersecurity. Their professional organisations estimate that the total cost could reach CZK 15 billion.
The Czech Republic has received more than CZK 4 billion in EU funding for healthcare digitalisation. However, the funding distributed so far has largely benefited major hospitals, while smaller healthcare providers are still waiting for dedicated financial support.
Roman Brauner, an economist, entrepreneurship expert and Rector of Sting University, also highlighted the business dimension of running a medical practice. Market conditions inevitably change and business owners must be prepared to respond. In his view, it is unrealistic to expect the state to cover every new expense or disruption through subsidies.
